Before treatment starts, it may be helpful to know what to expect with ZOLADEX.
Here is some information about ZOLADEX administration and possible side effects. Remember, your healthcare team is available to explain this information and support you along the way.
ZOLADEX is a small implant that is about the size of a grain of rice. Your doctor or nurse will use a needle to inject ZOLADEX under your skin. In an administration study of 24 patients, the majority of patients reported minimal pain from the ZOLADEX injections (1st injection n=16; 2nd injection n=13).
Injection site injury has been reported following injection of ZOLADEX. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, shortness of breath, dizziness, light-headedness and/or any signs of confusion.

Once you begin treatment with ZOLADEX, your ovaries will produce less estrogen, and you should stop having menstrual periods for as long as you receive treatment. You may also have other signs of menopause, such as hot flashes and headaches.
These menopausal symptoms should go away after you stop treatment with ZOLADEX. Additionally, premenopausal women with normally working ovaries should start having periods again after stopping treatment with ZOLADEX.
It's important that you keep scheduled appointments so you get the correct dosage at the correct time. Talk to your healthcare team if you are facing any challenges with treatment so they can help you stay on track.
Once you begin treatment with ZOLADEX, the testosterone levels in your body will decrease to the lowest levels possible without surgery.
Your body will reach these levels within two to four weeks of starting therapy, and will maintain these levels for as long as you stay on ZOLADEX treatment.

As a hormonal therapy, ZOLADEX limits the production of testosterone by the testes. The most common side effects include hot flashes, sexual dysfunction, and decreased erections.
